Safeguarding Policy

The Bowls Development Alliance was awarded the NSPCC Advanced Safeguarding Standard in November 2016 in partnership with all 5 bowls codes.

Together we have developed Safeguarding Policies for the whole sport of bowls which affirms the five organisations commitment to ensuring that the sport provides a safe environment for everyone to play.

You can find more details on these policies on this page.

Safeguarding Policy

Our safeguarding policy clearly outlines the protocols that are required at affiliated clubs and county associations to ensure junior bowlers and adults at risk are protected.

Additionally, there is information for those clubs who are seeking guidance on specific aspects of safeguarding for example, job descriptions, templates, and best practice advice.

These documents are reviewed on a regular basis and are aligned to any changes in legislation that occur. The latest copy is available on the Bowls Development Alliance Safeguarding Resources page.

Returning to Bowls Following Membership Suspension

Following any disciplinary or safeguarding-related suspension of membership, the constitution determines that an individual may be required to complete a formal risk assessment process before reinstatement is considered. Where appropriate, membership may be restored with specific conditions in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all involved.

The ESMBA follows an established, staged approach to support a safe and gradual return to the sport. This method enables the returning member, clubs, and the wider ESMBA community to rebuild trust and confidence through cooperation.

In most cases, the reintroduction process begins within a club environment only. This controlled setting provides a safe space for the individual while also safeguarding fellow members. Progress through each stage will be monitored and reviewed to ensure that all conditions are met and that participation remains safe and appropriate for everyone.

This structured process helps ensure that the return to bowls is managed responsibly, consistently, and in the best interests of both the individual and the wider ESMBA membership.

Details of the usual stages for return can be downloaded here or on our resources page.
